On Wednesday, 8th January 2025, Year 10 and 11 students from MPC visited Ravensbourne University for an immersive experience in TV and film production. This was the second trip to the university, aimed at giving students a practical insight into how a TV chat show is created, produced, directed, and filmed.
Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to explore different roles, from operating camera and lighting equipment to managing sound and giving production direction. A highlight of the trip was the group’s participation in a chat show challenge called Celebrity Jenga, where two students confidently took on the roles of host and guest, delivering an improvised and entertaining performance.
Ravensbourne’s Outreach Officer praised the students’ engagement, saying:
‘The learners focused well at all points of the day. While some were initially reluctant to try out the equipment, after some encouragement and modelling they challenged themselves to ‘have a go’. Many students picked up new skills such as basic sound control very quickly, and the two hosts on camera were confident and funny. Well done to all Mayesbrook students for stepping out of their comfort zone and trying something new.’
The trip also supported Gatsby Benchmark 7 – Encounters with Higher and Further Education. By visiting the university campus, students were able to visualise potential future pathways, whether through college, sixth form, or an apprenticeship.
This experience not only enhanced students’ technical skills but also built their confidence and teamwork abilities, reinforcing the importance of hands-on learning in creative industries.
