English Curriculum

Intent

The intention of the English Department is that students are well prepared for external examinations by gaining important knowledge and by acquiring the key skills to succeed. 

The curriculum has also been designed so that students are able to use this knowledge and these key skills to help them to understand their role as a responsible member of society.

Implementation 

At Key Stage 3: Students follow a termly curriculum that has an overarching theme. Over the course of the term students tackle a range of challenging texts that are thematically linked. Each termly Scheme of Work (SoW) is made up of ‘mini’ SoW. The KS3 course has been designed in this way for a number of reasons.  Firstly it allows students exposure to a wide range of demanding texts and makes links between them. Secondly, it gives plenty of opportunities to start again. This can be useful for our students who join us midterm as well as current students who need opportunities to start a-fresh.  

Students learn to hone three important skills that will help prepare them for future external GCSE examinations as well as life beyond school.

What do we want our KS3 students to do? 

  • Speak with dignity and listen with respect. Our Oracy programme has been designed so students learn how to make themselves heard and teaches them how to listen with empathy.
  • Write with power. Students learn how to use the English language to convey meaning.
  • Write with eloquence. Students are explicitly taught how to write academic literature essays. 

At Key stage 4: Students follow a half termly curriculum with a clear focus on GCSE examination success. Year 10 students cover a text in every half term, with language questions being implicitly taught. In year 11, students revisit their literature texts and are explicitly taught how to approach the language papers. There is an independent learning programme in place that supports students to prepare for external exams. 

What do we want our KS4 students to do? 

  • Enjoy grappling with humanity’s big ideas through reading and studying GCSE texts.
  • Write and speak with power and conviction by deploying academic literacy with finesse.
  • Enjoy success in external examinations.

Catch up learning

We know that students whose education has been interrupted need to have gaps filled so we have created a curriculum that:

  • is interleaved, so key knowledge is repeated and key skills are practised in different contexts.
  • contains frequent recall activities to promote memory skills.
  • explicitly teaches academic literacy.
  • includes a structured independent work programme.

Impact 

Our students understand that literature is a way for humanity to explore and reflect on its own complex nature. It is with this knowledge that our students confidently approach any text. They know the strategies great readers use and deploy them with ease. We want them to recognise the pleasure of reading with insight and sensitivity. It is through their reading of a range of challenging texts that they are able to better understand the world around them and their place in it. We want students to know they are the masters of the English language.

Students are excellent communicators in both the spoken and written word. They know how to skilfully manipulate the English language so their meaning is clear. Students will recognise the never ending importance of English and remain lifelong scholars.
