The Outreach Tuition Plus service (formerly Home Tuition/Access to Education), offers access to education to children temporarily unable to attend full-time school because of illness, special circumstances or the unavailability of a suitable school place.
The aim of tuition is to prevent the student from underachieving and to be able to transition successfully into a suitable full-time placement in the future.
Outreach Tuition is a short-term intervention: it is not an alternative to mainstream school. The goal of tuition is to prepare the student (academically and behaviourally) for a successful transition into a suitable full-time educational provision.
Referrals to Outreach Tuition Plus are made through four pathways:
- From schools for student who have medical needs
- From EHCP caseworkers for students who do not have a suitable school place
- From the borough Inclusion Team
- From the borough Admissions Team
Tuition is provided during school hours (9 am - 3pm). Tuition for Key Stage 4 students may take place in a public library, community center or at one of the Mayesbrook Park School campuses.
Tuition may also take place online.
If tuition is online, the Outreach service will arrange for a representative to make regular welfare visits to see the child in person.
Tuition currently focuses primarily on the core subjects - Maths and English. The service is currently undergoing expansion and will in the future include science and life skills/mentoring in the curriculum offer. A more bespoke curriculum offer may be made for students, where possible.
Tuition is reviewed at regular intervals to assess the readiness of the students for a return to full-time education.
Where medical conditions persist, professional opinion is sought, and parents may be required to provide appropriate certification or evidence of ongoing conditions.
