History Curriculum

Intent

"To engage and empathise with the past"

Students at all campuses study History at KS3 and KS4 level (GCSE). We expose our students to an array of topics and themes that paint an  inclusive view of society. Below is a table with a list of topics taught at MPS.

At Key Stage 3	The Tudors and Stuarts The Transatlantic Slave Trade The Victorians. Titanic The causes and events of World War I. The Inter-war years including the Policy of Appeasement. The causes and events of World War II including The Holocaust.
At Key Stage 4 Edexcel Pearson is the exam board we use at MPS.	Unit 1 -Crime and Punishment (c1000- the present) Unit 2 -International relations and The Cold War and Elizabeth I (1558-1588) Unit 3 -Weimar and Nazi Germany (1919-1939)

All students are fully supported to ensure that they can make adequate steps to catch up on the curriculum. Teachers and LSPs take the time to meet with students to bring them up-to-date with the history content being studied in each class. 

Implementation

History lessons are taught weekly to all students across the 2 sites with Mrs Salter leading as the subject specialist. Students have access to high-quality classroom teaching as well as online resources that can be accessed at home e.g. using google classroom. Students are taught how to construct historical arguments and are introduced to sources and evidence (ready for the start of their GCSEs in year 10).

Impact

History is a subject that impacts on students both academically and socially. We expect all students to make good progress each half-term which in turn builds up their confidence and happiness in school. 

Students who are not making sufficient progress will be given extra support in  collaboration with other subject teachers to address any gaps in learning and to remove any barriers. 

Students are regularly assessed through a variety of ways including quizzes, peer assessments and mock exams. They are also given one major assessment each half-term that is ‘deep marked’ against GCSE Assessment Objectives (AOs).
