Mayesbrook Park students Reggie Edmead, Mitchell Chipperfield, Eduarlin Beltrand Sentana, Davey-Lee Dwyer and Rahil Salim took part in the world’s largest indoor rowing competition on Friday 3rd March, with Mitchell and Davey-Lee winning the Boys Year 9 and 10 SEND 2 Minute events.
Run by London Youth Rowing since 2007, the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championship this year involved some 2,800 competitors from SEND and mainstream schools, clubs and community groups in a full day of indoor racing at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds.
Competitors at the London event were cheered on by five-time Olympic champion Sir Steve Redgrave and Arshay Cooper, a member of the USA’s first all-Black high-school rowing team. The event aims to make rowing as inclusive and accessible as possible, as Sir Steve Redgrave explained: “It’s about engaging people, getting them into the sport and providing opportunity… to improve their lives.”
