Exploring Careers in Construction with Marlborough Highways

Students from Mayesbrook Park campus recently enjoyed a hands-on visit to Marlborough Highways, gaining a fascinating insight into the world of construction, road maintenance and the many career opportunities available in the industry.

Following the company's involvement in Mayesbrook's Careers Carousel event last year, Marlborough Highways kindly invited a group of students with an interest in construction to take part in a special workshop.

The day began with an introduction to the company and a tour of its warehouse, where students explored the machinery, tools and equipment used in everyday construction and highway maintenance.

Students then put their teamwork and problem-solving skills to the test with a practical challenge to build and lift a wall made from paper cups without it collapsing. They also took on a real-world maths exercise, using measuring wheels to calculate the cost of replacing a section of kerb. A little friendly competition added to the excitement as everyone worked towards finding the correct answer!

The visit helped students understand that careers in construction involve much more than practical skills, with maths, communication, teamwork and planning all playing an important role. They also learned about apprenticeship opportunities with Marlborough Highways and the different routes into the industry.

A big thank you to the team at Marlborough Highways for providing such an enjoyable and informative experience, helping our students explore potential career pathways and see how their classroom learning can be put into practice.
